Creation journal : Blizzard, dressed for winter

Blizzard is a show immerging the spectator in a snowstorm typical of Québec’s winters. Costume designer Erica Schmitz constructed a clever system of layered costumes to illustrate the season’s rigor while allowing the artists to express their joy as well.

In a blizzard, it is impossible to distinguish sky from earth, everything is white. Therefore to immerse the public in the storm, costumes are initially sober, in the tone of pale blue, white and light grey allowing the artists to blend with the surroundings.Only a few color punches such as a green hat, red gloves or yellow scarf are visible through the storm.

When the blizzard is calming down, temperatures are warmers and spirits are lighting up, like if spring was beginning. The artists remove one layer, taking off coats and hats. The public can now tell them apart and their personalities start to emerge as well.

We imagine the artists find themselves in some kind of lodge, taking off the rest of the winter clothes to be in their ski underwears. Thus lightened, it’s then time to celebrate the joy of winter.

The costume many layers easily allow the artists to show the differents realities of winter and immerse the public in this special weather.
