Creation journal : Blizzard’s origins with Olivier Normand

April 15, 2019

Today, we shine a light on the creation and ideas behind our new show Blizzard just for you. Director Olivier Normand explains the creation of the audacious show that will soon be hitting the road.

What is a Blizzard ? It’s a meteorological condition during which visibility and contrast are drastically diminished by snow. The horizon line vanishes and all landmarks are disappearing, rendering orientation almost impossible.

Olivier’s favorite season is winter, for him it’s a reset button, a time to rest and start over, a slower time, almost an hibernation when it is possible to take our time and live in the present.

Since the beginning of the creation, Oliver wanted to represent Québec in the show and there are no better ways to do so than representing winter. He then needed snow, cold and a blizzard. He formed in his imagination a giant prism to be used as a scenic element as well as an acrobatic tool. The Blizzard will be created inside this giant prism.

This feature allow to create another dimension to have the artists appear and disappear during the show. The blizzard will eventually take the stage over and at this moment of confusion only the piano will be visible.

The spectators are plunged in a snow storm, surrounded by white. A world without any other landmarks than a prism and a piano. There are no moments before or after, the only option is to live in the moment and appreciate the show.
